This historic hillside village, a ancient hillside village in southern Spain, approximately a short drive from Granada, is the breathtaking backdrop for this painting holiday. Participants of all abilities – even beginners – will discover how to conceive and execute abstract artworks. Some time will be spent outdoors, working on guided exercises out in nature. These initial sketches and watercolour studies will then be expanded upon in the workspace, with guests completing multiple interpretive scenes in acrylic paint to be displayed in the local community. The group has sole use of the hotel, which is built around an open courtyard and has a rooftop with views over the countryside. The price includes five days’ painting tuition; all meals; and an outing to the local castle and additional points of interest.

Ottolenghi-Inspired Culinary in Portugal

This Mediterranean foodie getaway, located at a villa by the river in the central Algarve, is draws inspiration from the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Participants will learn to produce selection of small dishes, take part in a hands-on falafel session, perfect brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains such as a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are visits to the local market and a local vineyard to sample local vintages, along with free time for walks by the Funcho River, to relax on the terrace or swim in the pool. The accommodation, a renovated rural property, has five bedrooms, as well as glamping tents in the grounds.

Street Dance in Buckinghamshire

Hip Hop Don’t Stop is an uplifting, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The daily schedule throughout the camp is a high-energy warm-up session, followed by three hour-and-a-half workshops covering various urban dance forms, then an 60-minute freestyle session to demonstrate those solos. Dancers are split into groups according to ability and experience, so it is perfect for those who are completely new to popping and locking, all the way to advanced dancers or instructors. The camp does not provide lodging but there are several places to stay nearby, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into central London.

Maritime Singing Break in St Ives

This coastal town is the ideal location for a sea shanty weekend. Participants will be taught historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at composing original ones. There will be vocal warmups, breath control techniques, performance tips and a closing performance. The holiday is based at a rural hotel overlooking St Ives Bay. All meals are included, such as a traditional tea on arrival, breakfast options, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, alas, is not provided. Everyone join in: “What will we do with the drunken sailor …?”

Creative Writing in Crete

Writer and lecturer an experienced instructor runs the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He explores everything from plot, characters, locations and tension, to submitting work to agents. The holiday is based at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the Lefka Ori – ten private accommodations are set around a garden and pool (companions are welcome to come along).
