Violent conflicts broke out when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "horrified" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police reported more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, together with multiple guns.

Mission Context

The coordinated mission by civil and military police comes after a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are frequent in the country prior to important worldwide conferences in the country.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is set to occur in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
