Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.
Summers remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await observing their progress".
The prominent academic, who once headed the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it understood his choice to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," OpenAI stated.
This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its files on the case.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the office of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he intends to sign the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
A collection of Epstein-connected messages released by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications showed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce Summers to prominent international personalities.
After the messages were shared with the public, Summers expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my misguided judgment to maintain communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish trust and mend relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Summers held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He headed the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public duties previously on Monday, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.
Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in Washington where he was a prominent member, verified that he was no longer associated with the group.
The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
