Gas Detonation Costs Three Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Operation in the Verona Area

A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as police and firefighters approached the property near Verona to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the site and another man who fled subsequent to the incident was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been taken to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene revealed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the property was facing an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official believed the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
