The head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the UK might have reached pizza saturation while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been ousted after disagreements with its board.
Andrew Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the company's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a long-term chief.
Rennie, who served at the company for more than two decades, had sought to shift Britain's biggest pizza takeaway chain towards chicken offerings, stating earlier this month there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He said chicken was the quickest rising menu item in the globe.
It is understood that there was tension between the CEO and the directors over his focus and management style, although Domino's announcement said he was departing “through mutual consent”.
In September, the chain unveiled its poultry product line – which the former chief described as a “major strategic shift” for the organization – and is piloting it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.
While the firm is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as intended, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its core pizza business.
The Domino's chair, the Domino's chair, stated: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and profitability in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing identifying the right chief executive to direct the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said orders fell by one and a half percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “intensified” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the run-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.
Rival chains are also struggling. Pizza Hut announced the closure of multiple locations a last month, after the firm behind its outlets fell into administration.
Responding to market shifts towards balanced diets, the company has rolled out reduced-calorie items, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 kcals as well as plant-based and wheat-free options. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a personal has 909 kcal.
The interim chief has been with the company since the recent past, and was formerly with the betting firm William Hill. It is thought that she is not seeking to occupy the top job permanently.
She said: “Our team has a multiple active growth and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on carrying out at speed.”
She said these included further work on the organization's logistics network and product development, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also lacking a long-term CFO until the spring, when Andrea comes aboard from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Snow acts as interim finance chief.
