Amid freezing rain, snow, and a swirling wind from the banks of the Humber, alongside a resolute Hull City side pushing hard for a top-flight place, this presented all the ingredients of a challenging night's task for the visitors.
"We could have scored more but Hull are a strong team and it was a tough fixture; I am delighted with the performance," the manager stated. "Hull City is very special to me so it was nice to get a good welcome from the fans of fans. The attitude of the lads was excellent."
Liam Rosenior has this place close to his heart, given part of his family hail from Hull and his enjoyable spell in management of the Championship club. His positive connection continued with a commanding performance from his squad, who ultimately sauntered into the fifth round of the famous old competition.
Seventy-two hours after surrendering a two-goal lead in the league, there was a sniff of fragility about them going into this potentially tricky cup clash. The capacity Hull support clearly felt it too, but the London side navigated the challenge perfectly.
Rosenior rang the changes, making seven of them to his starting lineup. The tie could and maybe ought to have been decided long before it eventually was, with both Estêvão Willian and the forward guilty of spurning glorious opportunities to put Chelsea in front in the first half.
But, fortunately for the away team, their Portuguese attacker was in a much more clinical mood. He opened the deadlock with a marvellous distance effort, which proved to be the catalyst for his team to assume command of proceedings. By full time, they had 4 goals, with the forward scoring a trio of them for a brilliant three-goal haul.
The home side showed plenty of fight all game, but the better chances consistently came to the visitors. Estêvão should have broken the scoring when he rounded goalkeeper Dillon Phillips before unbelievably firing over. The striker then had a similar nightmare moment in front of goal against his old team.
He deflected a Phillips's kick which bounced off the crossbar, and Delap began to celebrate believing the ball had gone over the line. It hadn’t, and by the time he realised, Hull's backline had reacted to clear the threat.
Delap had his head in his hands after that moment, but he was immensely influential from there on out, registering three key passes. The opening was for the first goal as his pass teed up Neto to finish from outside the box. Six minutes after the restart, it was 2-0 as Neto's corner went straight in under the keeper's legs.
Soon after the second goal, the match was put beyond doubt as a dazzling dribble from Delap teed up Estêvão to slide into an empty net. Neto then completed his hat-trick as Delap again delivered the crucial ball for the striker to coolly slot past a stranded Phillips.
At that point, the work Hull had done in the first half-hour had long since erased. Their priority must now return to achieving a promotion to the top division under their manager, who rested several key individuals with that goal in mind.
"In my opinion we earned at least one goal but if we perform like this we will be in a strong situation in the league," he said. "Keep fighting, maybe in the next games this can be a good example of how we should play."
There was great effort to the final whistle, and they almost got a late goal when a substitute hit a the upright in stoppage time. But this was Chelsea’s night, and another encouraging step forward for their new head coach at a place he is familiar with very well.
That resulted in an ultimately straightforward night's work, and the cup competition omens are good from here for the winners. They have played Hull on three other times in this tournament in the last decade and on each occasion, they have gone on to make the final. There is remains to be done in that regard, but this was another huge positive for the Chelsea boss.
