Venus Williams, Awarded Special Entry for First Australian Open in Five Years.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
