Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the departed director Rob Reiner, who directed her in the iconic romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles over the weekend.
“We will miss this man so deeply…” Ryan shared on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. We appreciate your faith in human goodness and your deep patriotism.”
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan went on to write. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner through a message shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“No one matched his comic instinct, his dedication to rhythmic dialogue, or his elegant sharpening of drama,” it read. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”
When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
