Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the south-west.

This situation come after this month's fires in New South Wales, which resulted in the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a system of high pressure moves eastward, bringing intense sunshine to a broad swath of the region.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless heat creates a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

Global Weather Extremes Trigger Chaos

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into blackout recently after strong winds damaged the city’s power grid, with falling trees bringing down power lines. The weather conditions also led to major transport delays at a key airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Substantial impact on electrical infrastructure is expected to cause further issues as service providers work urgently to restore power to over 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Mist Covers Typically Clear Area

At the same time, a region famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest weeks on record. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, keeping temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by exceptional fall precipitation that left the ground saturated.

Storm Brings Snow to Tourist Destination

Turning to Spain, a weather system has ushered in intense rain, powerful gales and even snow to a set of islands – conditions many would not connect with this favored tourist spot.
